This is not your father's "Waite Smith" Tarot deck!
This is an Anglo-American Playing Tarot, a deck of 78 playing cards designed for English speakers to play the Tarot, Tarock, and Tarocchi games of continental Europe.
Contrary to popular belief, Tarot cards were not originally intended for predicting the future.
Tarot was made for card games which are enjoyed today in places such as France, Italy, Switzerland, and central Europe.

"The recent episode of ABC's The View called "A Paranormal View" was a disgrace! It was nothing more than an infomercial for John Edward's new Infinitequest.com website! This is not journalism!

On the subject of tarot history, that psychic tarot reader Sandy Anastasi, was either grossly misinformed or she's a big liar! None of what she said about the history of tarot cards is factually correct. ABC News, The View, and Whoopi Goldberg should be ashamed for promoting this distortion and stereotyping of other people's culture! We live in the age of the internet where factual information should be available to the media.

Someone should should have told Whoopi Goldberg and The View that tarot cards were really made for a card game which is still played mainly in continental Europe. They were not made for any supernatural, paranormal, or psychic purpose. There is no evidence at all that tarot cards were originally made for any other purpose than for playing a trick taking card game.

American tarot game players are trying to educate the general public about these card games and these biased and inaccurate tarot reports focusing only on psychics and fortune telling are damaging to our efforts to broaden the cultural horizons of other Americans. The mainstream media needs to stop promoting the misinformation and occult stereotypes surrounding tarot cards."

The star of this show was psychic John "Biggest Douche of the Universe" Edward and his Infinite Quest website. I took the time to watch Whoopi Goldberg get her Tarot reading and this show sucked ass badly, my friends! I sent my response to ABC News to inform them of a different angle from which to cover the Tarot.

"I found the segment on Tarot cards to be appalling. I play card games with Tarot cards. There is no evidence at all that Tarot cards were made for any other purpose than for playing a trick taking card game. Contrary to popular belief, the Tarot was not originally intended for telling fortunes. I wish Whoopi Goldberg were as skeptical as Joy Behar. Not one word uttered by psychic Sandy Anastasi was the truth. I don't mind if people wish to read Tarot cards but the media should stop spreading the distortions and falsehoods that these psychics often espouse. Google the terms "tarot card games" "tarock" "french tarot" or "jeu de tarot" and you will find a boatload of info on how Tarot is used for game playing. Tarot cards are not myserious. The information about them is on the internet. There is no excuse for this poor quality of journalism."

If you haven't already, then you may want to check my channel and view the first film in this series - that will give you a little background and explain why I want you to play card games with tarot! This programme will give you a brief introduction to the cards used, how they are ordered, and some of their names.

Like the other films in this series, you should try to watch in High Devinition and full screen - this will give you a clear look at the illustrations.

Part 2b is in the works and will introduce you to the basic conventions that are common to most of the games.

Tarot cards began to appear in early to mid 15th century Italy. The practice of reading tarot cards dates no earlier than the 18th century.
Tarot is the trick taking card game that brought forth the notion of a trump suit in card games. Tarot, like contract bridge and skat, has been called the "chess of card games" for good reason. Tarot has clearly made a valuable contribution to our game playing culture. This contribution is sadly being obscured by those who continue to sell tarot exclusively as a fortune telling or divination tool. . The notion that tarot cards are only used for fortune telling or the occult is completely false.
Not only do these games excercise one's thinking and memory skills, they are quite wholesome and suitable for all family members.

Well, this is a very rough start and will have to be remade as I get better. There is still a lot to learn about film making although the narration is perhaps the weakest part of this - I hope to improve with time.

As I say in the film, this is intended to be the first of a series that will go on to teach you how to play the many games of tarot. I do suggest watching them in HD so as to better see the illustrations.

Remember to visit www.tarocchino.com to download the pdf book with a large selection of rules. This little book is going to get some further revisions in the next week, so do check back fo rthat.

Promoting the games of tarot over the dominant myth of fortune telling and occult significance is an uphill effort, so if anyone else wants to help - and at this point, I stress that this is a non-commercial effort - then that would be most welcome. There are permissions in the book for reproducing and re-distributing its contents and if you would like to mirror or link to this film, that will all help gain coverage.

What's Tarock you ask?
It's a type of card game similar to Sheepshead or Spades. It is also known as Tarokk, Tarok, Tarocchi, and, yes, Tarot! If you thought that Tarot cards are only used for fortune telling, you were wrong. They are also used to play actual card games. In fact, people played Tarot card games long before these cards were used for fortune telling!

So now, the first thing people are saying on the topic of Tarot
gaming is not divination but those McRoll videos? Wow! I never would
have imagined that they would have such an impact!

For the uninitiated, these videos are remixes of Japanese McDonald's commericials, often called "McRoll" "Ran Ran Ru" or "Ronald McDonald Insanity"
They first began to appear on the Japanese website Nico Nico Douga and they are now quite prevalent on YouTube.
Lately a number of these "McRoll" videos contain messages attacking the divination website Tarot.com.

The anti-Tarot.com McRolls will typically be titled "Tarot.com Sucks" or "Tarot.com. Experience the Bullshit"
Below is the typical text quoted from these videos:

"Paul O'Brien has been feeding bullshit to the media!
O'Brien is the CEO of Tarot.com and here are some examples of the bullshit he's been feeding to the mainstream media.
'There is an intricate web of intimate relationships and correspondences between Tarot and Astrology.'

I should mention that I am no fan of Tarot.com. Tarot.com is not always a reliable source of information on the topic of Tarot cards. Like all too many of those making money pushing the divination uses of Tarot cards, Tarot.com have been guilty of misleading the general public and, because they are one one of the leading divination websites, a lot of their distortions end up in the popular press.

The idea of the game is to score points by winning tricks and the various card are assigned points for scoring purposes. This is a very subtle game, which may take some practice to master but great fun to learn.
